hi,my 63 diff has been converted at somtime to a later 67ish style posi 3.70 ratio (was 3:36 according to the case code)this diff has always been noisy under coast and drive conditions.when i rebuilt it i had trouble obtaining a good gear pattern and finally gave up,the crown and pinion appear to have date codes, pinion is GM 5-66 pn#3819081, crown is GM 5-66 pn#3737957, the date codes (if that is what the 5-66 5-67 are) don,t match each other and maybe that is why i can,t get a good pattern? anyone have any experianceadvice??..thanks, ian

The ring and pinion that you have are a properly matched set; the date code "mis-match" is irrelevent and would have no effect, whatsoever, on your pattern problem. As a matter of fact, the ring and pinion that you have are a 63-64 3.70:1 gearset which was known as GM #3822993.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: c2 diff
Ring and pinion gears were "broken in" at the plant on a fixture that loaded and turned them with an abrasive oil to establish an initial "correct" contact pattern. They were sold as matched sets, so assuming yours is an original matched set you should be able to establish the correct contact pattern with the correct pinion depth and backlash.
Pinion depth is established by pinion shim, and backlash, along with side bearing preload, is controlled by the differential case shims. There is a good discussion of this in the '63 Corvette Shop Manual that includes contact pattern diagnosis and correction information.
