    c2 1964 heater core leaking ,no a/c

I notcied yesterday that there was some antifreeze leaking on the floor of the passenger side of the car. Heater core is shot I'm assuming. I have never replaced one . Can a back yard mechanic tackle the job and about how many hours.

    Thanks

Rick, this is very much a DIY job. There is a very good article in last years Restorer on this. Lots of detailed information and photos as I recall. The biggest headache in this whole operation is removing the duct work under the dash. I would allocate a long afternoon for the job. Most of the vendors carry the Delco replacement core but I can't comment on the quality or the appearance. When you are disassembling the core, take note of the bracket that holds the core in the heater box. In addition, some folks have commented that their brackets have rusted away.

      Alternative....

Some of the original heater cores are getting hard to find in replacement form. Plus, though not visible once installed, they were dated....

You might be pleasantly surprised in terms of cost, original 'number' conservation, and turnaround, what can happen when you walk a leaking original heater core into your local radiator repair shop! After all, this part is nothing more than a tiny copper/brass radiator....
