    Wheel bearing numbers

Several of the parts houses offer a tapered roller bearing conversion for C1's. Does anyone know the numbers for the bearings and races? I'd like to check the price from an industrial bearing supply house vs the $175 or so that the Vette suppliers ask.

    Ed,

I have fitted a set to my 59 and have the numbers somewhere in the garage.

I will get them as soon as I can find them.

If I haven't replied in the next day e-mail me to remind me.

By the way the seals are identical to the original ones fitted to the roller bearing setup.

    Mark.

Could you also post your opinion on changing from the ball to the roller bearings?

Thanks, Mark. If I can find a "generic source", I'll post the contact info and prices. I hate to spend $175 on an experiment.

          OK Ed and Chris,

The bearings are Japanese but from various disscussions with some knowlegable mechanical engineers it seems to be the general consensus that Jap bearings are top quality with only the Chinese and Taiwanese being on the slightly suspect side.

The brand is MBS and the numbers are, Inners (Big)Part No:909052R and on the tongue of the pack there is printed 76x30 but I don't know what that refers to.
Outers (small)Part No: 909067R with the tongue noting 56x20. These boxes contain the full race. The seal (Made in USA) which was exactly the same as the ones that I had with the old ball bearing setup is a National Federal Mogul part No:6064.

So that's it, I paid the $175 bucks that ended up costing me around $400 AUD with exchange freight and taxes so I hope they're worth it.

I only got the 59 started on Saturday and ran it around the block on Sunday for the first time after the complete resto and I was so excited that I doubt if I would have noticed four flat tyres let alone what the bearings felt like so I'll give a report in awhile when I have driven it under various conditions to be able to assess them.

To be honest I don't expect much of a difference although I have heard that they give a more stable feel but as I have rebuilt the entire front end I doubt that I will be able to give an accurate assesment.

Hope that I've been of some help.

Good luck with finding the bearings.

I'll be "slightly" upset if you tell me that you found them for $9.95 at the local bearing supplier but I do hope that you find them at a more competitive price.

          Mark.

            Re: Wheel bearing numbers

Mark, Thanks for the info. I will see what I can do with those numbers. Actually, I was hoping for four numbers. Each bearing (cone) has a number and may be used with different outer races (cup). The outer race will also have a number. The "X" X "X" numbers you gave may be the most valuable as I believe they are the bearing inner and outer diameters expressed in mm. Do you have the old bearings? If so, could you measure the ID of the inner race, the OD of the outer race, and the thickness of the assembled bearing? These measurements could help pin down the parts. Again, thanks for the effort.

              Ed,

I beleive that I still have the bearings but it may be the weekend before I have time to check the measurements.

              Mark.
