I have a 63 327/340 with original engine, intake and afb carb. The carb has been rebuilt but is not in the condition I would like it to be. I am going to get it restored for function and looks. My question: is there a carb(easily obtainable) that can be used as a direct replacement for the afb on the original manifold with or without an adaptor plate. I am concerned about hood clearence if an adaptor plate is used. If there is not a direct replacement then I assume I will have to replace the manifold also to get a proper match. I would like to do this as soon as possible. Any suggestions? Thanks

Re: 63 AFB Carb
My '63 327/340 has a '64 carb on it with the original manifold. I would check with people who sell/refurbish carbs. They can probably recommend a replacement while you are waiting for yours to be rebuilt. Another possibility is that the folks on the Corvette Forum has a carb loaner program for C-3's. Some guy has some rebuilt carbs that members can borow. Hope this helps.Dick- Top

Re: 63 AFB Carb
I believe that the modern AFBs, Edelbrock and Carter, will bolt right on. Your intake manifold has the old style AFB bolt pattern. Most carburetors and manifolds have the Holley bolt pattern. I believe the modern AFBs have dual bolt patterns on their bases for both Holley and the old style AFBs.
The linkage should not be a problem. You will have problems with an air cleaner and the fuel inlet. The fuel inlet is in a different place, so you'll have to fabricate a line from your existing end of the fuel line to the new inlet. Rubber fuel hose is what most people use. Tres tacky, though.
Your old AFB has a 4 and something inch air horn. New carbs have 5 1/4. Your old air cleaner won't fit a new carb. You can get air cleaners cheap from the usual hot rod places (Summit, Jegs, etc.). Try to get one made for AFBs so you don't have interference problems. Edelbrock makes one.- Top
