    Oil pump replacement

Has anyone replaced an oil pump on an early C3? How big a job is it for a Saturday afternoon mechanic? Eliminated the mechanical oil pressure gauge over the weekend.

It's really not too complicated of a job:

    1) lower steering relay rod (for oil pan removal clearance)

    2) remove starter and bellhousing front cover

    3) remove oil pan

    4) remove oil pump mounting bolt and remove oil pump

The most difficult part of the job will be installing the new oil pump pick-up screen into the new oil pump. It's an interference (press) fit and it must go in "straight-and-true".

I also suggest replacing the rear main seal when you're into this that far. At this point, all it involves is removing the rear main bearing cap and replacing the seal, upper and lower. Follow the procedure shown in your Chevrolet Service Manual.

I sugjest the purchase of the tool for driving the pickup tube. It makes it ALOT easier. ALOT!

Don't forget the permatex #2 at he ends of the main seal. but don't let it squeeze out on to the bearing. Use just a little.

      Good luck!

It's also a good idea to tack weld the pickup tube to the pump body, just to prevent any chance of dropping the pickup in the pan....Craig
