    Air con. convertion to 134a

    Does anyone have any thoughts on converting r12 to 134a. Good or bad? Just as cold? Compressor life reduction?

    check into converting to R-414B( trade name Artic 12) as it does not require any changes to your system,oil,"O" rings or hoses and you only need 90% of the R-12 charge

      I have converted over from r12 to r134a in 8 cars included my vette. I just made sure it was drained and then put the full oil charge in it and the r134a. I have had no problems with any of them. It has been about 2 1/2- 3 years for a couple of them and they work perfect and i have not had to recharge them yet. Thanks Eric

          I run R134a in my stock 69 A/C system. It is just as cold.. However.. R134a is very sensitive to the correct charge.. You want 26-28 psi on the low side with the engine running about 2000rpm. In my car that works out to about 70% of the R12 charge. You should also replace the drier with a newer one as some of the older drier have a different dessicant.

              Check out the information available from Interdynamics at id-USA.com FAQ. This company makes the kits. A co-worker has done several by just evacuating the R12 if any and vacuuming down the system and adding the R134 oil and and R134. Uses only about 80% of what what the car used of R12. He did a Lumina a couple years ago for his son and he just mentioned the other day that it works great.

                Yeah, and some people say don't bother to drain the old oil; don't bother to flush; don't bother to change the receiver/dryer/accumulator, etc..

                There's something in the old oil that when exposed to moisture in the air makes an acid that eats the delicate aluminum in your expensive condensor and evaporator.

                I've done lots of work 2 and 3 times over on my C1. I hate that. So when I converted the A/C system on my regular car, I replaced and flushed as much as practicable.

                I guess the answer depends on how long you intend to keep the car.

                  I knew about the R12 acid thing. But does 134 oil do it too?

                  I hate doin' it twice too. If you can't do it right the first time don't bother. Cause sombody is going to have to deal with it someday. Right?
