I have a 1982 Collectors Edition. It has the 4 Speed Auto trans. with a 2.87 rear. I find that below 50 mph in drive, I get a lot of stuttering and jumping. It also is barely at 1,000 rpm's. Is this normal for this trans? Should I drive around town in 3rd? It barely seems to be driveable under 50 mph in drive. Thanks.

What you describe is rather common problem for cars with overdrive automatic transmissions. Your 1982 Corvette was the first Corvette to have this sort of transmission with the first installation of the THM 700R4 transmission in a Corvette.
I would highly recommend that you keep the transmission in the "3rd gear" position when driving around town. This will prevent the engagement of the OD and the "lock-up" torque converter and it will keep your engine revs in a better portion of the engine's torque band.In Appreciation of John Hinckley -

You can also buy an adjustable governor kit that will automatically do the same thing. I have installed a 700R4 from an 89 in a 66 and have adjusted it so that it will not go into overdrive untill 45+ and will drop out at about 35. So if you are in a 35 zone it will stay in third. If you are in a 45 it will go into overdrive, but will not drop out unless you fall to 35. It works perfectly. The kit comes with several weights and springs and finding the correct ones may take some time, by trial and error. But if you get it dialed in, you will love it.Comment
