    Speedometer On Drugs

OK this is baffling me -- Looked down at the speedometer when cruising along at 55MPH and all of a sudden the needle is bouncing around 80 MPH and flickering there for about 15 seconds - then the needle settles back down to 55 mph where it should be. This happened several weeks ago -- same deal. How could a cable be half broke? Or is it in the speedometer head assembly or whatever this is called? Thanks Bill

Check to see if your odometer is still working. I had a similar situation where the speedometer bounced all around the dial then settled down and has been fine, however, the odometer hasn't turned a mile since. I've been told that this usually means the gears in the odeometer are shot. Not sure if this is your trouble, but worth checking...

Hope you speedo knows when to say when. I'm lazy but I had success greasing my speedometer cable and eliminated the bounce about 75%. I pulled the cable off the trannie and injected speedo cable grease with a grease gun. Got it to a tolerable flutter in WOT, and it was completely stable in cruise mode.

I am not sure whether the same can be done with the TACH cable, perhaps a learned non-yuppie can join in with more advice.....

      good luck
