    56-62 windshield info

Many post have been made regarding sealants to use on C1 windshields. I just took the windshield apart on my 62, and I am very confident it hadn't been apart since 1962. There appeared to be a small amount of non hardening sealer between the gasket and the lower channel. It was heaviest at the ends where it was probably used to help hold the nut plates in place during assembly. There was no sealant between the gasket and the top channel. THERE WAS NO SEALANT PERIOD BETWEEN THE GASKET AND THE GLASS, TOP OR BOTTOM. There was no sealant between the side posts and the gasket.

For you guys that are interested in dates and numbers, both side posts were inkstamped "JAN 25 1962". The car was built on Jan 31, 1962. The Jan 25 date may be the date the windshield assy was put together rather than the date the posts were manufactured.

Thanks for the info Ed. I will put this in my handy 62 file for when my windshield comes out.

    Todd.

      Ed (or anyone else),
Do you have any handy tips for getting the top windshield trim piece to snap back in place when re-installing so it fits flush with the side posts. It appears that it should snap under the lip of the top frame but how to get it there not apparent and based on my attempts, not easy.

Ed, thanks for posting the info. If I had known this last year, my job would have been a lot easier and less messy. Funny thing is, Al Cellier and I test assembled the entire assembly without any sealant, easy as pie. Then we took it apart and did it "right" with sealant between the gasket and all four channels. D-oh!

Bob, one thing that may help is that the upper trim only goes under the lip of one side of the upper channel. I don't remember whether it was the interior or exterior side. Could that be your problem?

That may be the problem. Since I installed the interior side first the exterior side will not fit. I'll try taking it off and doing it the other way.
          Thanks

Re: 56-62 windshield info - Bob

            Bob,
I had the same problem with which side to clip the s/s top molding. Logic tells me to clip to the outside channel. That will prevent rain water from being driven up under and onto the top steel channel. I asked but can't recall an answer (if any) was this molding as it left left S. Louis originally clipped at the back and front. Regards,

Jim, I believe that is correct. I'll let you know when I get mine reassembled

                It's the exterior side

of the stainless trim that clips under the channel. The interior side kinda hangs out a little. There was a discussion about this last June 2001 that could be worth checking out.

                  Re: It's the exterior side

I pulled the trim off and tried to re-install it clipped under the exterior portion of the upper frame but, I didn't have any success. My rubber seal is snug with little give to allow the trim piece to go in. I think I could force it except the curve on the trim piece won't allow me any wiggle room. In fact, the trim piece snapped back into place the way it was before, sticking out at the front with very visible spaces where it meets the side posts.

I'll see if I can find the post from June 2001
