    Speedo Gear Installation

It is not readily obvious to me which direction the plastic speedo gear is to be installed. Bear in mind, I am doing all this with my tranny in place so mirrors
and remote extensions are the tools of the day. It looks as if the long stud of the plastic gear goes in first with the tooth portion facing out, then the sleeve.

this seems to line up (haven't done it yet) but the sleeve doesn't appear as if it would fit this way?

P.S. there is also a plate retainer for the sleeve, the tranny has a tapped hole
for this retainer piece. Anyone have an idea what size thread that is?? it looks
    like 3/8" (borg warner t10)

I think you will find the shaft part of the speedo gear slips in the sleeve with the gear part going in the trany first. I typically put the plastic gear in the brass bushing first and then put both in the trany at once.

I can't help you on thead size till I get home tonight.

Re: Speedo Gear ONE MORE THING

If you look at the plastic gear the long end has a square hole for the speedo cable.

With all manual trans speedo DRIVEN gears, the gear end goes in first. The shaft section of the nylon gear is inserted into the FITTING prior to installing the assembly into the transmission extension housing. Then, the steel RETAINER, GM #3708148, slips into the notch in the fitting and is fastened to the extension housing via a cap screw. The cap screw is of either 1/4" or 5/16" diameter (I forget which) and of 5/8" length.

The retainer screw is 1/4"-20 thread.

Coat the stem of the gear with grease before inserting it in the sleeve. This will help prevent it from falling out while you are installing it. Be careful, it is possible to drop the nylon gear into the case and then you likely will have to pull the transmission in order to retrieve it.

Doug, if its that easy for it to fall out and drop in the tranny.
(which I understand won't ruin it since it will fall into the sump,
                or so I've been told)
then what keeps it in place to begin with, under normal operating conditions???

                  Re: Speedo Gear Installation

Doug - there is a protrusion on the outboard end of the gear that mates into the housing when installed. However, if you accidentally catch the gear teeth on the hole while installing and pull out, the gear can slide out of the coupling and drop into the case....Craig
