The speaker in my 66 sounds terrible, and I think it is blown. I have been looking at the dual speaker replacements that are offered by Mid America, as well as others, but noticed only repo speakers have a transformer. What is the reason for this transformer, and is it required for operation? Thanks in advance, Dan

Re: C2 Speaker
Dan------
1963-76 Corvette radios require speakers with a 10 ohm imdedence. I don't think that speakers with this rating are manufactured anymore. So, I'm guessing that what you describe as a "transformer" may be a device to impedence-match a current speaker to the 10 ohm requirement of the Corvette radios. But, it's just a guess. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Yes, most modern speakers are 4 ohms impedence. You can't use a 4 ohm speaker without risking damage to the radio. Plus, it will sound terrible; I've been down this road once-upon-a-time. However, if you can find an 8 ohm speaker, and there are some out there, they will work acceptably as-is.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Dan:
If the paper cone is intact (not torn), then your speaker is not blown. These are old radios, and do not have the fidelity of modern units--they all sound terrible (by today's standards). The original speaker had the transformer, and replacements are available as original. I bought mine from L.I. Corvette Supply.
