    Frying the steering damper

The steering damper on my L79 67' roadster is leaking and the rubber insert on the driver side end (that is attached to the chassis) is literaly melting! The exhaust pipe 8 or so inches below the exhaust header is 1/4 inch from the driver side damper end. Obviously the pipe is super hot at this point and seems to be passing a lot the heat to the damper. Is this normal? Should I wrap the pipe with some insulation of some sort to protect the new damper I plan on buying. (As far as I can tell the side pipes were added and not original.) Is this a normal situation?? Any ideas would be appreciated. I tried resetting the pipe and shiming up the bracket that holds the damper end and bolts to the frame but this only buys me another 1/8 of an inch?? Thanks!!
