    C2-electronic ignition conversion

I was thinking about changing out the points and condenser in my 67 BB. The unit I am considering does not change the stock appearance. I would be interested in any comments from those who have done this conversion, both from a performance standpoint as well as judging concerns. Thanks

    Rob -

The Pertronix units work great, but have an extra red wire to try and hide; the new "one-wire" systems cannot be told from stock from a judging perspective.

Be aware that these units do NOT increase 'performance' in any way, shape or form. They can inherently do not better than a properly adjusted fresh set of points and condenser.

The advantage is it being a set-and-forget system, but with the disadvantage of less reliability than points and condenser. If and when it dies, it will happen usually with no warning and cannot be fixed on the road side. Either put up with adjusting your points once a year, or keep the removed parts with you to re-install when needed.

        Mike,

I disagree that these electronic units do not imporve performance. I replaced my dual point setup with a Pertronix Ignitor II (hides in the distributor just fine) and matching flamethrower coil. I noticed that right away, I was getting better performance. I get a hotter spark to the plugs, and the Ignitor II also electronically adjusts dwell based on engine RPM. One other noticable improvement was stable spark at higher rpm's that I was not getting with the dual point setup.

You are right, that these units can fail and if you are on the road when it happens, you can not repair it so I do carry my old components with me just in case. That is a good idea

At the last meet I was at on Long Island the Mech. judges were raising the adjustment window on the distributor cap looking for points. (no pun intended). One car had the conversion and points were deducted. I dont recall how many.

Walt- please re-read the original post

and my answer. The poster made no mention of changing his coil- just the points and condenser. The hotter spark comes from the coil, not the triggering unit.

Sounds as if your old dual point set up was not performing as per factory design specs, probably from 30+ years of use. Stating that a new 'upgrade' unit performs better than a worn factory original set up is a little bit of apples and oranges.

I've had nothing but bad experience from these units (sudden failure) and try to steer people away if they want one for 'performance upgrade' reasons.

O.K., I see your point ( no pun intended ). In my case, I didn't have factory original to begin with. My car had been "upgraded" in the past to have a Mallory dual point distributor with no vacuum advance and dual points (among many other changes). Swapping the coil was necessary for the Ignitor II module as it needs the correct ohm coil. For me, that was no big deal since not much on the car is original anymore...

My personal opinion is that those judges need to be counciled on being too "nit picky." The NCRS standard is dealer showroom APPEARANCE and if it hides under the distributor cap, then that should be OK.
