    C2 dash repair

The bottom of the center dash section where it meets the center console is cracked and flaking. The two outer dash pads are in great shape.
Is there a good solution to repair this condition? My car is not a show winner but I don't believe in covers either.
Is the only solution to remove the dash assembly and recover the center section.
If I go to that trouble should I have the outer section reconditioned as well?

    Any help is appreciated,

Are we talking about a 63 or 64 here?

The center dash area of the 63 and 64 Vetts was covered in vinyl. You could remove the the center section repair the fibreglas, strip the old vinyl and get a new vinyl fabric for the center section. I replaced the vinyl covering on my 63 last winter. The replacement vinyl is available at several reproduction parts dealers. Corvette Central, L I Corvette Ecklers ect.

How difficult is this task. I know it's not fun to pull the entire dash assy. out.
How difficult is it to separate the dashboard sections? Is the vinyl glued on?

It is not a difficult task but it is time consuming. First thing I like to do is get alot of zip lock bags. As I remove an item I put the fastners in a bag and lable them. It makes the assembly much easier. Disconnect the steering wheel and column lower out of the way, remove the dash cluster, glove box, both pillar trim moldings, lower windshield trim, radio side panels, radio, clock, heater controls, console. At each door jamb there is a tab which is rivited to the jamb with 5 or 6 rivits. Drill them out. You can buy replacement rivits from Corvette Central ect. The lower front of the dash frame is glued to the top of the transmission hump. A screwdriver or pry bar will break it free. Remove aproximatly 6 bolts which hold the dash arould the lower windshield. Lift out the entire dash. Once out you can remove the right and left pads. They have small clips. Insert a small screwdriver in the middle of the clips and twist. They will open and can be removed. You may have to buy new clips they break easily. I also found that the clips which hold the lower windshield trim in place break very easily. These parts are available in the aftermarket. Remove the speaker. You may at this time want to have the speaker rebuilt. I also repainted the speaker grill. The vinyl should peal off the dash. Install the new vinyl with heat resistant contact adhesive. You may need an extra set of hands when working with the vinyl covering and the contact adhesive. Take your time and good luck.
