Re: C2 fuel gage sending unit
Tanks sending unit CAN be repaired, but result will rely upon your bench skills as an electronic technician.... 'Spare parts' are not available new, but the 'guts' can be obtained from equivalent period Chevy passenger car tank senders at your local scrap yard ('63-67).
The sending unit is 90-ohm wire wound potentiameter. The wiper arm mounts to a plate that's held to the body of the pot by three crimp tabs. You un-bend the crimp tabs and remove the wiper arm from the resistance portion of the pot body that's weled to the Corvette specific tank rod.
Once inside you'll typically see two failure modes:
(1) The contact of the wiper arm is worn/trashed.
(2) The nichrome wire winding of the pot's resistor are melted/open circuited at one end or the other.
If the failure mode is #1, you transplant the wiper arm from a scrap yard donor sender and reassemble the unit by re-crimping.
If the failure mode is #2, it's because the sender was electrically overstressed (short circuit, wrong hook-up, flakey ground) and you'd best find and correct the problem with the sender's 'nest' wiring before you go any further or else you're simply going to 'blow' the pot again!
You have two alternatives to repairing the resistive body of the pot itself.
(a) Transplant the wire winding assy from your donor sender (ugh, it's riveted).
(b) Lay down a competent solder bridge to reconnect the open circuited wire winding making SURE the area of repair is NOT along the travel area of the wiper arm contact.- Top

Re: C2 fuel gage sending unit
John, You can purchase a new complete unit from any of the corvette suppilers for $175. There is also a brand new one on EBay with a price of $75 so far....
Good luck on the rebuild.- Top

Re: C2 fuel gage sending unit/Jack Humphrey
Thanks Jack.
I think the most important thing to look for is the 90 ohm resistance. If I fiddle with the wires and connections at the tank I can momentarily get the gage to respond, however, That doesn't last. The electrical check of the gage shows good function and full scale. I'm trying to convience myself the problem is on the connections to the sending unit under the tank, but even I don't buy it.- Top

Re: C2 fuel gage sending unit
There are now some repros that are availabe at a significantly reduced price. The price now does not justify the effort of repairing. Just make sure that it is the three wire style. For a while there were some out there that were wired wrong and they were useless. I have used one for 5K miles now with no problems.- Top

Re: C2 fuel gage sending unit
John,
A few years back I bought a fuel tank sending unit for my '66 from AC Delco. I don't think that there is any difference between '66 and '67, but you will need to verify. I went to my garage and found the box that it came in. The part number is 6428065, group number 03.107. The cost was around $157 at the time. Good luck!
