59 taillight date.

HIYA Guys,

Whilst showing my "recently back on the road at last" 59 to a guy at the parts store he noted that I had the wrong tailights as they had 58 moulded into the top of the lens.

I have heard that a lot of the chev cars can be roughly dated this way but I doubt that there would have been different tailight moulds made for each of the three years that came with these type of tailights.

This guy rubbed me the wrong way as he said that if he was a judge at any of the local shows that he would deduct points for this.

Now I'm not concerned about the comment as I wouldn't be entering it, but I am curious as I didn't know how to reply to his criticism.

All the lenses '58-60 are built from the same mold, all dated '58. Just another "expert" showing how little he (or she) knows.

The date molded into the lens is the year that particular lens configuration was certified by Guide Lamp as meeting SAE photometric standards - not related to the model year of the car.

Now all I have to do is work it into a conversation with the guy so that it will put him in his place but still leave me looking like a classy guy!
