Can anyone identify big block casting number 361959, dated D4 75? Is it a 427, 454, 2 or 4 bolt mains? Thanks, Rex #8089

Re: Block Casting #361959
Rex----
The GM #361959 casting was actually used from 1973 through 1990 in a variety of applications, including cars and trucks. I believe that all were used for 454 applications, but some of the truck versions could have been 427 CID. Most post 1970 blocks used for 454s could be used for 427s as well; the blocks are the same and only the crankshafts are different. 454 blocks have reliefs for the crank counterweights but that doesn't preclude their use for 427 applications.
The 361959 block was manufactured with both 2 and 4 bolt main bearings. Most, if not all, of the 4 bolt versions were used only in trucks and the vast majority of the 361959 blocks were produced with 2 bolt caps. A 2 bolt version can easily be converted to 4 bolt by installing a set of GM 4 bolt caps (still available from GM) or aftermarket caps. Drilling the extra cap bolt holes, machining the caps to properly register in the block and align-honing the block are also required. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
