Chicago has had a hot summer, two weeks ago I noticed that the right rear bumper cracked after sitting in the sun for an hour. I think the bumper is made of polyurethane. When the car was moved out of the sun the crack widened{heat expansion and contraction I'm sure) My question is - can the bumper be fixed or must it me replaced. Has anyone had this experience what was done to fix it.

Re: C3 1974 rear bumper
This is a very common problem with 73-75 bumper covers. The black type will finally just disentegrate. There just aint much you can do at that stage but replace it. Problem is that a real 74 is going to be a little pricy to say the least. Fiberglass replacements are available.- Top

Re: C3 1974 rear bumper
Wayne - my 74's bumper bit the dust years ago in the same way...since I was not trying to make this car NCRS judging ready, I decided to use the 80-62 style bumper. I bought it back in the early 90's and have had it stored it the bag, not in a box in my storage room, sitting flat with the tailight area facing up to keep it from forming wrong. Do these black parts have an aging issue when stored versus used such as this? It still seems very soft and pliable to the touch....anything I should do differently? I got this very cheap as my parts buddy gave me a gonga deal as the body shop that ordered it never picked it up and they wanted it out of their inventory...so I paid about 50% of list which at the time was about $220. Thx, Craig- Top
