Can't the spot welds be drilled out so that the coil can be rewound? The people that rebuild these units must take them apart to rebuild them.

Actually, the coil is removable, just not easily..

The armature shaft rides through a brass bearing that fits into a clip retainer inside the housing. The bearing has probably seized to the shaft (common). If it is forced out, the retainer clip will be sprung and the motor will not function properly when re-assembled. You may be able to free it with penetrating oil and/or heat to the housing and ice on the shaft (Caution). When removed, the wiring on the coil can sometimes be repaired, depending on how deep the screw damage is. Any more questions, you might contact Steve Hack in Ohio. He advertises in the Driveline. Other rebuilders do as well.

Thanks for your response. I have started digging at the weld by drilling and dremel tool grinding and decided to quit until I consulted with members of the board for more options and or ideas to tackle this problem. It is my belief that rebuilders are refurbishing everything but the field coil. They only want good cores to rebuild not ones that have bad field coils, at least the ones that I have talked to. But I could be wrong. Thanks again.

Thanks for your response. I have the armature out already no problem with that. I have a problem with field coil that turns the armature, not the armature it self. Is it the armature what your talking or am I confused. It would not be the first time.

I had myheadlight motors restored back in June of this year. They looked great! They work great! Turn around time was short and the price was very reasonable. Open and closing speeds match within 0.5 seconds. The restorer is one of only two or three people who actually do the work for the various vendors. I believe that he can even rewind coils. He also does all years as well as wiper motoer and PW & Pseats. He even restores stainless steel trim. I highly recommend him.
