56 Generator & Distributor ID tag date format

Can someone tell me the proper format for the date code on the distributor and generator ID tags? I have the dist. and gen. restored and I am ready to put the new tags back on.

Can anyone tell me where to get the proper ID tags for a 56 starter motor? I know that they are NOT the same as a 57 and later.

Dave, The distributor: year first (single number,in your case probably 6), next letter for month, then day. 6E9 would indicate, May 9 of 1956. The Generator date stamp would be the same order format. I was not aware the starter tag was different from the repro's. What's the difference? Regards,

No Tag On Starter...

There's no date code tag on the starter (at least for a '57, don't know about '56, but they look the same - the part numbers are different, but the difference must be internal - Joe would know). The part number and date code is stamped into the starter housing itself.

There is a date code tag on the 56 and not one on the 57. Also, the two staters are a bit different-the 57 starter having a complete metal sleeve covering the end portion of the solenoid and the 56 starter having a rubber covering over the end portion of the solenoid. These differences are from my observations.
