Call me a dipstick if you want,..but are all small block Chev dipsticks equal in length?
Are the "FULL" and "ADD" in same measured locations on stick?
Must the tube be positioned a certain angle into the block to get a proper reading?
Thx
Jim
Not all smallblocks are the same. Some smallblocks dip sticks are on the left and some are on the right and the dip stick tubes are of different lengths.
Small blocks used a variety of dipstick lengths and configurations. The dipsticks were designed for different oil pans and have to be used with the proper upper dipstick tube. For a 1977 L-48 engine, the dipstick upper tube is GM #460147 and the dipstick is GM #3981019. Both are still available. These parts MUST be used with the 75-79 style oil pans if the dipstick reading is to be accurate.
