The trans (4 speed)on my 62 gets real noisy above 55 MPH and the shifter shakes a small amount. The car has a lot of miles on it. Is this usually the bearings that can be replaced or do the gears actually wear and get loose?

Re: Noisy 4 speed
If a bearing is bad it will tend to make more noise than normal in first through third. There's less load on the bearings in the direct drive top gear.
While in neutral push in the clutch and observe the type/amount of noise. Then let out the clutch. If you pick up a new quite noticeable growling or rumbling noise, the clutch gear bearing is probably bad. If it's just a slight noise that is not real distinguishable, then the bearings are probably okay.
With a high mileage car it could be anything. Shifter "buzz" is common with the T-10 linkage, and it could be missing the anti-rattle spring. The gears are probably okay. The typical wear parts in a T-10 are the sychros and bearings.

This may apply, but in Muncies, the typical wear items are bearings, synchros, and slider sleeves, which as synchros, are made of a softer steel, which is sacrificial. Patrick- Top

Re: Noisy 4 speed
My first set of wheels was 61 back in late 67. The one thing I'll always remember about the car for was the BW T-10. I was constantly holding the shifter (hand resting on it) from the vibration in the reverse linkage assy. on the shifters tower.
I'm sure Dale or someone who's an expert on these years can give you the necessary info.Or call 4 Speeds by Darrel Shepard he may have rebuilt towers and linkage assy.Or can help you if it's another problem. Good luck,grr#33570- Top
