    License Plate Restoration

I am looking to get a set of 1963 license plates re-done to put on my roadster. Does anyone know where I can get them restored?

Jerry, Try John Witt, License Plate Repainting, 3638 Perada Dr., Walnut Creek, CA 94598 (510) 935-0463. Someone recomended him to me.You can give him a call and talk to him. I have not had my plates done yet but I was going to use him when I do. Joe

I had a few sets done 5 or 6 years ago by a gentleman in Pennsylvania, named Daryl's. I got his name from a Hemmings Ad. He did museum quality work. I haven't seen his ads lately but if you come across him he is a great restorer. If I can find his number I will email it. Otherwise look in Hemmings under Services and see who may be advertising that specialty these days.

        Darryl's
        266 Main Street
        Duryea, PA 18642

He did a plate for me in May 2002. He did a nice job; however, it took 90 days+ and three phone calls, so don't be in a hurry.

Jerry, Daryl's did several Massachusetts plates for me. The most difficult to match is the Red plate which is correct for 1959(60), and 1964. As I mentioned in the earlier post they are super, but be prepared to wait 2 or 3 months.

I don't know how it is in other states, but brand new plate of this vintage are easy to find in Texas. I can buy a new set still in the wrapper for almost any year after 1950 for $50-$60 a pair. At this price it would not make sense to restore a plate from a purely financial standpoint. I would look around and find who sells tags in your area, you might be suprised at the price! One old couple I know just goes to every county courthouse they can find and offers to buy them old junk plates taking up space in the basement! Regards, John McGraw

Steve, there is an old couple in Lockhart Tex that sells all years. I will look in my stuff tonight and see if I can find a contact #. They hit almost all the car shows and swap meets in this part of the state. Regards, John McGraw

Thanks. I haven't made a real concerted effort yet, but the one I have seen so far have been pretty rough.
