Re: paint on knock off rims
Jeff, based on your previous experience I'd be a little hesitant to send it anywhere. Did the restoration, other than the paint, meet your expectations?
If so, then you may want to strip the paint yourself. You may want to try a small spot on the back of the rim to find a suitable stripper.
I "accidently" stripped the paint off my Cadillac rims between the "spokes" I was cleaning the wheels (chrome with a silver paint insert) with PURPLE POWER degreaser full strength and it soften/removed some of the paint. It didn't harm the chrome. I don't believe it will affect the aluminum but you want to try it in a small spot using a soaked rag to test it.
Another suggestion would be lacquer thinner or acetone. Again, try a spot before going whole hog.... Be careful as these are very volatile fluids.
DON"T use any of these solutions on paint you want to save. Also, wear rubber gloves as these do a number on skin if exposed for extended periods of time. Once completed then repaint the wheel where you want the paint to be masking the rest with tape and paper.
Good Luck- Top
