    Need detailing advice

Does anyone know how to remove ink from hard plastic? A very long time ago a pen exploded on the parking brake console of a friend's '70. Is there a way to get it off?

    Rich------

It's very unlikely that the ink will be removeable, especially at this point. However, the emergency brake consoles were originally painted interior color over ivory or gray-colored plastic. Although they were delivered to the St. Louis assembly line already painted from the supplier, they were painted. They were not "through-colored" plastic. So, to restore one, they can be re-painted with interior paint of the appropriate color as sold by most of the Corvette vendors.

      Hello,

Something you may want to try is bug and tar remover. I have actually used this on cloth seats to get ink off (after it had dried) and it cleaned the seats with no tell-tale signs.

I've used hair spray to take ballpoint ink out of cloth as well as vinyl. Check on a hidden spot first to make sure it doesn't take out color. I never had a problem using it.

          Hi Rich,
I've used a product called "Goo Gone" for this and it has worked. Home Depot sells it. Try it in an inconspicuous area first and if it doesn't damage, melt or discolor the plastic, try it on the affected area. If that doesn't work, I agree with the other respondant of the need to repaint the entire cover. If you can remove the cover with no big deal,... clean/scrub it good with a brush and cleaner such as Simple Green, rinse and allow to dry, ...then wipe it down good with a clean rag and thinner, allow to dry and hang it with a coat hanger and then repaint 2 or 3 coats with vinyl interior paint which most any Corvette restoration place sells.

          Good Luck!

"Goof Off" is another one to try, or that orange smelling hand cleaner, it's citris based and can remove some pretty nasty stuff...
