    Got the alarm to work!

Hi to all. Tonight I got my 72 alarm system to work! Since I have the spring out, either to re-arch or replace, I decided to troubleshoot the alarm. I took the spare and cover out and proceeded to pull the parts off. First I tested the horn, off the car, using a 12V battery charger. It worked. Then I cleaned the contacts at the switch, the two relays in the back bin, and re-installed everything. IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was probably dirty contacts since all I did was clean them, wire wheel them and re-install. In addition, I sprayed a liberal amount of WD-40 into the rear lock cylinder to clean out anything there. I guess the moral of the story is to start with the simple stuff before you go crazy with the big (expensive) stuff. Gary 21316

    Gary,

Did you do anything to the horn after you removed it? I cleaned my relay and flasher, bench tested them, installed a new Biggs and Straton switch (there was no key for non-original switch on the car) and I can hear the relay activate but no horn sound. I haven't removed the horn yet, but I'm hoping is just a connection inside the horn since the horn looks like a pretty simple device.

Because this car is so original and everything works (even the clock - well, most of the time) I suspected that the horn would work. I removed it, cleaned the positive and negative contacts and then, using a 12V battery charger as a power source, got it to sound. So, I now knew that the horn worked. After that I pulled the keyed switch out and inadvertantly touched the orange and pink wires together after I removed them from the switch. I could hear the relays click. Now I knew the horn, the relays, and the wiring to the system worked. So where was the problem. Next, I took the keyed switch and cleaned the contacts and sprayed the WD40 in there. It then worked. I don't know, or really care, if it was the contacts being cleaned with steel wool or the WD40 that did the trick.
