    1969 Option and Model Information

I recently came into possession of a February 11, 1969 Bulletin from a Zone Distribution Manager covering various model and option changes/stop orders on all car lines and trucks, and I thought those affecting the 1969 Corvette would be of interest to the group:

A/C Cancelled on L-46/M-21 Combination: The Corvette Power Team Chart has been revised to reflect the 350hp Corvette 350 RPO L-46 engine with the M-21 Close-Ratio 4-speed transmission as no longer being available with RPO C-60 Air Conditioning due to inadequate cooling for city driving conditions.

RPO N-14 Side-Mounted Exhaust System: In December, 1968, a wire was sent placing a Stop Condition on transmittal of Corvette orders with N14 Side-Mounted Exhaust, which explained that difficulties currently being experienced are limiting production to only a very few of this option daily. St. Louis had over 1,000 N14 orders on hand in December, and it looked like it would be late January before those orders could be built, so all January orders not yet transmitted to the plant had N14 removed, with February orders possible for production again. On January 17, another wire was sent indicating that N14 material was now being received at a rate which would support transmitting N14 orders again starting January 21st. Present indications are that N14 orders now being transmitted will be scheduled for production starting at the end of February.

RPO L-88 Special 427 V-8 Engine: Production of units specifying this option are currently being delayed due to what appears to be a critical hood problem. Since these are all sold orders, we have instructed the Plant to hold all L-88 orders pending more definite information on hood availability.

The other "performance" issues with problems were restricted allocations on the Z/28 option for the Camaro due to limited availability of the 302 engines, and demand outstripping manufacturing capacity on all car lines for RPO J-52 Power Disc Brakes.

Re: 1969 Option and Model Information

Interesting, but I'm perplexed at the cancellation of C-60 with L-46 and M-21.

The standard axle ratio with the M-20 WR was 3.36 and the standard axle ratio with M-21 CR was 3.70. If you compute the overall ratios (transmission ratio times axle ratio), the first three gears are about the same, so how could city driving cooling be compromised. In top gear M-20 turned about ten percent more revs for a given speed so the fan would have been turning faster at 35 MPH than with M-20. I smell a hidden agenda, by I'm clueless as to what it could have been, but the vacuum advance and centrifugal setup to meet emissions standards would have thrown more heat into the cooling system.
