    Best paint process HELP

OK I have read the archives and will continue to, but I would still like a few more ideas on the following. I have a 69 that I have just finished chemically sripping. I will be be washing and leaching the chemicals out before paint. I attended the NCRS convention and went to the paint session, two speakers. I have three of my freinds helping me, all have painting experience and one is a Dupont paint rep and ex bodyshop manger. I want a durable quality finish as a everyday driver, I will show (It is a numbers car) but do not want lacquer. So far I have 5 different suggestions. Here are my questions DO NOT TELL MY FRIENDS I ASKED YOU!

    1. Do I gel coat? One says gel coat and use poly primer, At the NCRS I was told use slick sand, gel coating is too hard to use.
    2. The Dupont friend said use a polyurathane primer over the glass because gel coat and poly primers are to brittle, and do not stop chemicals from comming through.
    3. Should I use a polyurathane single stage, or a single stage with clear, an acrylic enamal with a poly clear over it. The Dupont friend says use a base coat clear coat, it can be color sanded even though it is thin. The others say a single stage can be color sanded and you can not have something caught in between the clear and base, and also a base coat can not be sanded if it has a nub or two.
I may have to paint in a buddies garage if I can not find a booth. There you have it what paint, what primer, what system. Your Help is apprieciated, and thanks in advance.

I guess it all depends on what you are looking for overall, even though it a number matching daily driver. You failed to mention if it was a solid colour or a metallic. I f you are shooting a metallic colour and occur dust or dirt, single stage or 2 stage is not going to matter really as rubbing out the nub is still going to creat a difference in metallic appearance where you rubbed therefore you will still to "blow over) reapply paint to the area you repaired. This is much simpler to do if it is 2 stage(base/clear) as the base sets in approx 15 min and can be repaired quickly versus over night for the single stage.
I do my own work out of my garage at home and am producing show quality work using 2 stage for the reasons mention aboved. If you are painting a solid colour the a single stage would be fine as well as you can wet sand and buff the single stage easily.Single stage paints that are wet sanded and polished tend to produce a more true factory gloss then base clears for that era of car. Base clear systems tend to offer more gloss the a single stage after being wetsanded/polished.
To answer your question the way i would do it if you were to bring the job to me, i would do it the way your friend that is the dupont rep is suggesting. The primer, the base coat clear coat system as it is generally a fool and bullet proof solution.
If you you have any other questions gimme a buzz at ian.spaz@excite.com or call me at 909.314.3109, i am in Beaumont just east of san bernadino

      Cal,

Obviously, the final decision is up to you, but I can provide a quick testimonial. My nassau blue 66 roadster was painted in 1990 with a polyurethane primer and a base/clear system. I constantly get comments that it looks like it was just done. It gets driven on a regular basis - no trailers!

Thought I would pass that on for what it's worth. Good luck!
