I have what is best described as a "scraping" noise that sounds like it is from the front center or front right of the vehicle. The vehicle is a 1971 with the base 350 and manual trans. This "scraping" noise usually only occurs when making a left hand turn with moderate acceleration in 1st gear and I can get it do this on a regular occurrence. It has occurred only once on a straightaway though again in 1st gear. At first I though I might have had a bad motor mount causing the fan to scrape the shroud but found no evidence. Any ideas what to look for?

Re: Scraping noise in front of C-3
This is definately a metal to metal sound. Almost like an exhaust pipe dragging. I checked front wheel bearings for excessive play to see if the rotors were touching the backing plate. I can see to visual evidence. This had been getting progressively worse. Now I can make it do it on command. I'm still leaning towards by first thought of a bad motor mount causing the fan to make contact with the metal shroud. Is there any easy way to determine if a motor mount is defective?- Top

Open the hood, start the engine, set the parking brake, and push on the brake pedal with your right heel; put it in first gear, rev it up a bit, and let the clutch out - if you see the left side of the engine rise up and hear the scraping noise, you can be pretty sure the left side motormount has separated and is being held together only by the internal interlock feature. Do this in a clear driveway or parking lot, not in your garage. Could also be a separated transmission mount.- Top
