    1962 window seal replacement

Wayne's post revealing that I have Monte Carlo wheels hurt, but I will recover. Are the '63 - '64 steel wheels sold in the restoration catalogs (Elkers, Zip, etc.) accurate repos? At $100 each they're not cheap. Also, I understand that '64 hubcaps will only fit on the "right" wheels because of the location of the mounting clips. Is this true?

And yes, my order for the judging manuals, etc. will be sent in shortly. I gather this is going to become an expensive hobby. Still, I've had the Sting Ray for almost a year and I still break into this silly grin whenever I walk into the garage, so I have no complaints. Thanks to everyone for their responses.

Hi Mark; I'm unaware of any reproduction 63/64 wheels in the vendor catalogs, but I might be wrong about this. I'm sure that they sell "drum brake" wheels that will fit, but I'm not so sure that they are correct. Chuck Gongloff

      1962 window seal replacement

Can someone help me to find some detailed, step by step instructions on how to replace the door seal components on my '62? I don't know the proper names of these components so please bear with me. My winter project includes replacing the trim and fuzzy seals that hold the windows. There are also some tracks that the windows ride in that run up the "post" on the doors. Do I need any special tools?

        Tom,

I have done this job, but it has been awhile. I don't remember anything particularly tricky about it. Just take your time and watch how you take things apart. The door pillar has a couple of small phillips head screws embedded in the felt, you may not see them without knowing that they are there.

The big problem that I had was in the track at the back of the door. I bought a replacement for one that had the felt worn out of it. The new one came in so tight that when I installed the window it would not roll up or down. I called the vendor who graciously sent me a replacement that was exactly like the first one. I checked around and found that all of the vendors were selling the same part from the same supplier. I finally was able to spring open the track enough to make the window roll up and down.

The other item is the felts at the top of the door, inside the window and outside the window. These are held on to the SS piece by staples. Many people find it easier to pop rivet these back on. For judging be sure and take the extra time to staple them as original.

        Good luck John

Tom, You can get a look at the parts and names in the Zip catalog. 1-800-962-9632 or www.zip-corvette.com

The front channel comes in a kit with the small screws and rivets. You will have to remove the front post to get a good installation. (Now you will start thinking about having that re-chromed while it is out). The "fuzzy seals" are just tedious to R&R but you will have to remove the "reveal moldings" from the doors to get at them. The inner reveal is easy. Get a good small flashlight and inspection mirror to find all the nuts holding the outer reveal to the door. The rear channel is easy, just R&R the felt. Good luck.

Step One is to buy an Assembly Manual!

An assembly manual is very helpful, an ST-12 service manual is ESSENTIAL. Removal of the front post is pretty tricky. The rivets that hold the channel in the post are a bit difficult to install. I second the problem with the window being too tight due to the material in the rear track. It must be installed absouletly correctly with no creases. I use a square chisel handle just the same size as the window to smooth the material.

Ed, thanks for the help. Where do I purchase an ST-12 service manual? Do you have a phone number of the company that sells them?

It can be ordered on line from the NCRS store, or is avalible from any of the Corvette vendors. ( Corvette Central, Chicago Corvette, Zip, Ecklers, etc.) If you don't have a phone number for any of these, most have websites with on-line ordering. You can also request catalogs from them on-line. If you can't find them, email me and I will provide phone numbers.
