    gear clash

Just had the clutch replaced on my 63 340hp. A week later I find that when I shift into 4th after the car is warmed up the gears clash, only 4th, the others are fine. I know the linkage was off the tranney during the work and was hoping the answer may be simply related to poor linkage adjustment. I'm calling the shop tomorrow but would sure like any input on this one. BTW it all worked fine prior to the shop visit.

Re: gear clash- take it back

James, if you had a shop do the work or installation tell them it shifted fine prior undergoing THEIR repairs. They should fix it if they have an pride or good business sense. Good luck,gr#33570

If you were able to DRIVE it for a week

without a problem, either something in the shift mechanism is coming loose or breaking, OR the clutch needs adjusting - if the clutch is dragging between gears, the synchros take up the slack till they wear out. The most worn one will fuss the hardest/earliest. - Dave

Jim - it means that the adjustment is off not letting the clutch disengage fully, resulting in engine power being transmitted to some degree through the transmission during the shift. The synchros take the brunt of this punishment, until they wear out prematurely and rapidly, as Dave mentions. Best plan is to adjust the clutch. By the way, I belive Joe L had a thread on this recently about some aftermarket clutches having different geometry release characteristics, resulting in NOT BEING ABLE to get the clutch adjusted correctly at all given the limits of the pedal/cross shaft geometry. His moral was to use GM parts. Best of luck!....Craig
