I'm getting my car ready for a few shows. I have some surface rust on a few nuts and bolts as well as on my drive shaft. Does anyone know of any solution I can spray or wipe on that will take the rust off? I obviously don't want to do any srubbing or use any harsh abrasives. All surface rust is on the undercarriage. Thanks.

Re: Surface rust removal
Naval Gel (a form of phosphoric acid) comes in both brush-on and spray-on versions. It's pretty gentle stuff and does do what it's advertized to do provided the rust isn't super deep....
When parts are clean again, you've got a few preservative alternatives. One is to use a silicone coating agent like Pre-Lube 6 and the other is to spray a thin layer of clear paint (e.g. Krylon semi-matte clear). The silicone coating is impermanent, but won't discolor. The clear paint might be detected as a non-factory original finish, can/will change color especially if the part sees heat, but will last longer....
Remember in NCRS concours judging, minor surface rust on parts that were originally natural is a non-deduct issue (there WAS minor rust at the factory).- Top
