    1973 build sheet locations

    Hi everyone,

I have found a 1973 Convertible, L-82 4 speed with 48K miles that I have an opportunity to purchase and plan to go see later this week. My question is where is the build sheet or trim tag on these cars so I can try to authenticate it. I do not know a lot about C3's - most of my study time is on C1's.

    Thanks,
    Jason U.

    Jason------

The trim tag on a 73 will be located on the driver's side forward door jamb area. It is a debossed stainless steel plate which is attached by 2 pop-type rivets.

The build sheets are found on the fuel tank upper surface. You may be able to inspect for it by pushing aside the rubber fuel seal inside the filler door and looking about 8" to the left of the filler neck. You should be able to see if it's there, or not. However, to read it or remove it, you have to drop the fuel tank. Trying to remove one of these through the fuel filler door opening will likely result in its destruction. The document, if it's still there, will be VERY fragile and, likely, at least partially deteriorated by now.

Build sheets are sometimes also found under the dash. They may be tucked up into the speedo/tach instrument area, behind the center gauge cluster, or above the heater box.

      Re: 1973 build sheet locations

      Jason,
Joe covered it very well about the build sheet.

One good thing about the '73 is that the engine is coded into the VIN (this started in 72). The fifth digit of the VIN is the engine that came in the car from the factory; J=base L48, T=L82, and Z=LS4 454. So check the VIN to confirm that the fifth digit is "T"

Then check the engine stamp pad. Should be two sets of numbers there. One will end with the last six of the VIN if the engine is correct. The other will end with a three letter suffix. It will be CLR or CLS for an L82/4-speed.

A lot more info on the '73 at my web site below.

My build sheet was on the right side of the top of my gas tank. mine was
covered with so much dust and dirt that it was not readable from the filler hole.
