    David-----

I believe that the C1 differential/axle housing was painted semi-gloss black. I believe that the "third member" or "pumpkin" was also painted semi-gloss black, but I'm not as certain of that.

Thanks Joe; Mine was black and as I cleaned it I found large white paint swaths on the top and bottom of the banjoe housing that had no other paint under them. It also had several yellow and green markings on it near the attatch points for the springs and strut rods, and by the pinion area. David

        David -

The paint marks you found were originally applied at Detroit Gear & Axle when the axle was built for assembly identification; the axle was then painted black at G&A, and the top surfaces got another shot of "chassis black" blackout paint at St. Louis just before body drop.

So John; What color markings, if any, would be on the outside of the axle as finished in the car? Thanks

            David -

This issue was the subject of a Workshop presented back in June at Bloomington/St. Charles by Dale Pearman and myself, which, among other C1 Chassis subjects, covered the many paint markings on the rear axle in great detail, and the Chassis Blackout Spray Operation just before Body Drop that obliterated most of them; Dale has published a detailed handout which is very thorough - give him a holler at varooom@usit.net.

Long story short, essentially all markings on the axle (and everything else from the bellhousing rearward) that were in the spray path from above the chassis before body drop were covered with the asphaltic blackout paint; however, this is not necessarily what is accepted (yet) in judging - I suggest you contact your Team Leader for guidance on what the expectation is.

The appearance of chassis components depends on brake options as well as differential types and ratios. All inspection marks, frame stencils, and manufacturing code paint daubs are blacked out with asphaltic mastic paint. Brake and fuel lines are also painted.

              Dale.

Thank you John; I love the "archieology" of this hobby, sometimes it's the best part. My car is a driver but the info that comes as the parts are cleaned could help someone else one day. I'm sure I butchered that word (my best without looking it up) David

Is the floor-pan on the body the same way?
