    '66 dash -help!?#!

I removed the instrument cluster from my '66 and found two condenser-looking things with the wires cut off. What are they? Do I need to replace them? Where can I get them? One of them was about the size of an M-80(firecracker), paper covering with a wire coming out of the top and one out of the bottom. It was mounted to the bracket above the steering column. Since both wires were cut off, I have no idea what they should attach to. The second "condenser looking thing" is a little smaller, metal and has one wire coming off it. It was mounted on the back of the instrument cluster and that wire was cut off to. Also, I pulled the clock out. There are three tubes with wires coming off them mounted around the hole where the clock was. What are they and what do they do? One of those wires is cut off also. I just got a new wiring harness from Corvette Central and none of these items were included. Another question, how many bulbs do I need for the dash and what number are they? I am a little overwhelmed. I took the old harness out before the new one came. Nothing is labelled on the new one! Is that normal?

A few good books will help

Those things are noise (electrical system static) suppression capacitors for the radio option. If you look in the radio section of the 1966 Corvette Assembly Manual, it will show you how they were originally installed. Long Island Corvette Supply sells reproductions of these capacitors. They are not necessary in order for the radio to function.

The tubes near the clock sound like the center console control lights for an air conditioned car. No, they do not come with a reproduction wiring harness.

A bulb chart is contained in the back of the Chevrolet 1966 Chassis Service Manual by Helm. It lists the bulb part numbers and the quantities required.

--------Along with what Jerry has said, you must have realised that all the wires are color coded. Therefore you really need a wiring diagram. There should be one in your assembly manual,or you can order a really nice laminated one from Lectric Limited. These are indispensible tools for the electricly challenged among us(like me)...........Bill S

        Chip:

As was stated above, those capacitors are not needed, except if you intend to show your car, then, of course, these missing items will result in points deductions.
Last time I looked, the wax covered paper capacitor mounted on the column bracket (connectors go to the brake light switch) was no longer available from many Corvette parts houses. If you want to replace this, you'll have to pay dearly for an NOS or used piece.
Complete interior+dash light sets, as well as fuse sets are available from L.I. Corvettes. Both come labelled with instructions.
