I have a standard trans flywheel GM # 3978456N. Can I use this flywheel in my 1961 Corvette bellhousing? Will the stock starter function with this flywheel? Thanks in advance for any help........Phil

Re: Flywheel Identification
Phil-----
If I recall correctly, GM casting #3978456 is a 14" OD, 168 tooth flywheel applicable to 66-68 Corvettes with 427 and most 1969-81 Corvette applications. If my memory is correct, the above-referenced should be the dimensions of the flywheel. Also, there should be no counterweighting on the rear side of the flywheel.
Although 1957-62 Corvettes did use a 14", 168 tooth flywheel, the configuration of that flywheel was different than the 3978456. For one thing, the 57-62 flywheel was set up to use a 10-1/2" clutch. Most 3978456 are drilled for an 11" clutch only. Some may be dual-drilled for both an 11" and a 10.4" but, either way, I don't think that the 3978456 flywheel is usable in a 1961 application with a stock bellhousing. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Verle------
It's a little hard to describe. However, I think that the 57-62 flywheel is a bit "thicker" than the later style flywheels. The dimensional relationship between the crankshaft mounting flange surface and face of the flywheel may be different, also. The 57-62 flywheel is easily identified by its GM #3729004 casting number. As far as I know, this is the only flywheel that will work with a stock 57-62 bellhousing and clutch set-up. But, my C1 knowledge is EXTREMELY limited. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
