    1967 A.I.R. System

My 1967 327/350 is a matching numbers car but has a early/mid 70s A.I.R. system on board. It works fine. While I probably will not have the car judged, I believe overall the car is quite nice. Does it make sense to purchase a proper A.I.R. system ? Cranes in San Diego has a few. Is it a reputable shop, cause the system is not cheap ?

    Thanks

    Mike-----

Cranes might be ok on this one; he does specialize in AIR systems. And, no matter where you get a 66-67 type system it's NOT going to be cheap. The 66-67 Corvette pump and pump bracket were unique to Corvettes and the diverter valves are VERY hard to come by (since they are, basically, a "consumable" part and have not been available from GM for about 25 years). You can use your early 70s pump bracket. Functionally, it is exactly the same as the 66-67 small block bracket; it varies rather slightly in configuration.

However, before I purchased one, I'd shop around. Contact Bill Hodel or Greenhoes Corvette. Both advertise in the Driveline and/or Vette Vues Magazine. Bill is well known for good service and about as fair a price as you will find.

You may not be planning on having it judged but the next owner may. Having the correct parts would help the resale value, even if you don't install them. Just having them would be good. Those parts are not getting any cheaper, get them now before the price goes up more.

        Mike-

Over the past year, I've "scrounged" all neccesary parts for my '66 BB K19 coupe. The system helped the car (unrestored) earn a top-flight at NW regionals this year. It's good piece of mind to know it's all there - and correct.

I found original hoses, clamps, bracket, diverter valves and correct dated pump via word of mouth, tech boards and on ebay. Just have to be patient, and expect to spend anywhere between $1500 to $3000 for a complete, correct dated/configed functioning system.

I've seen about a half dozen listings for'67 SB smog systems/pumps/parts, etc. on ebay over the past 6 months. Some listings have been pretty good deals recently - like an NOS '67 dated pump for $250 or so.

I found that Both Bill Hodel or Greenhoes handle only '68 and above, but I do recall that one of them had an NOS '67 pump in his inventory he'd sell for around $500 at the time (about 9 months ago). Cant recall which vendor it was though... You might check both of them if you're serious about it.

You might try Joe Marquez in Nipomo California. He's a good, honest guy who frequents the CA swap meets. I bought a fine, date correct pump and hose set from him. He may have a line on what you're looking for. His number is (805) 929-3910.

        Good luck!
        Dan

Mike - I mirror what Joe, Tom, and Dan say. I have a 67 L79 KH car also, and I purchased a complete system from David Crane about 4 years ago for $1300, it had the right hoses, diverter, tubes, correctly dated pump for my May 67 car, pulley for the pump and spacer, but did have the 70's vintage pump mounting bracket. I spent the better part of 3 years looking for the correct bracket, and have some nice side by side photos of the difference that with Joe's help we managed to correct the next version of the TIM&JG through communications with Kieth Biggers since the guide calls out the part being stamped steel for the 327's vs the correct cast iron. Anyway, I have not installed it yet, but am very glad to have it all as my car is very original other than the smog gear was missing....good luck!....Craig
