    Holley-Power valve questions-Tuning bugs.

I have to say I haven't had a bad power valve since 1972 and that was on a 950 cfm Holley 3 barrel. I exhausted nothing but black smoke but I can't remember what other symptoms it had. Went and bought another for $60.00 brand new at Tognoty's Speed Shop.

My current car is a 67 tri-power(L-71). I've noticed a new problem,it floods easily when starting. I just don't feel right with it. Now the car did have some backfires through the center carb when I put the engine back together which if I remember is death on power valve.

I'm looking at the center 2 barrel as a possible problem. The accelerator pump is set as per book, the air fuel needle valves react to screwing in and out, 1/2 turn out from drop off of idle. Fuel level in all carbs at or below inspection hole.F/A carbs closed and ran vacuum test all 3 O.K. Jets are 64's. Idle about 900 RPM.Fuel, Sunoco 110 octane mix w/unleaded 93. Car was in restoration for 9 months and just went though entire T.I. (Dave Fielder). It does throw out a slight trace of black smoke when I start it hot or cold.Stock correct factory ignition wiring.Stock springs in F/A carb diaphragms.

When I GET ON IT I notice a slight flutter, not noise or miss but more like a skip or hesitation at 5800 RPM+.

I've adjusted the valves .024/.028, timing about 10 degrees advanced. I can do it with this gas w/out incident. Air filter is a K&N. New N43 plugs.

Any suggestions or anything wrong here please reply.grr#33570

    Re: Holley-Power valve questions-Additional

Sorry I forgot to mention my 67 L-71 has a center Holley carb #3660. Don't know what the proper jets or power valve should be. I know a 4055 center 2 barrel has a set of #63 jets, and a #65 power valve. But in 67 the center carb was a Holley #3660,F/A carbs Holley#3659 Thanks,grr#33570

      3660 uses a 64 jet and a 65 pv, the 3659 uses a -3 metering plate.

i would power time the engine for 36 degrees at full advance and i would run extended tip plugs for every day driving.
