Gas tank?

I have a 75 corvette, and I need to replace the sending unit in the gas tank. The only problem is, I can't figure out how to get the tank down to work on it. I know the sending unit is on the top of the tank, but how do I get it down without breaking anything? thanks...also, It's a stingray and on the driver's side (right in front of the "Stingray" emblem) is a hole. What is supposed to go there? I have no idea.

In 74 the alarm activator switch was moved to the drivers side front fender by the emblem.

The spare tire carrier and most of the rear exhaust hardware has to come off in order to drop the tank; the procedure is outlined in the Chassis Service Manual.

Have you procurred a new sending unit yet? This item, last available under GM #25000316, has been discontinued for quite some time. NOS examples are difficult to find. However, the last time I checked, I believe that Dr. Rebuild still had some NOS units available. They're not cheap, though. In fact, they were not cheap when they were still available from GM.
