The Amp. gauge on my '66 seems to be stuck almost at the +40 mark. When I put a load on the electrical system (turning head lights on) the amp meter does react correctly. Just can't seem to figure why it would be stuck over at the +40 mark. Anyone have some idea?

It's a shunt device that reads the voltage differential between the battery (at the starter) and the junction at the horn relay to sense whether current is flowing into or out of the battery; both wires from the ammeter go through the fuse block and the inboard engine side connector. If one of them has a corroded terminal in the connector, it will read full-scale all the time, one way or the other. Check continuity (battery disconnected) from the ammeter black/white wire terminal to the screw-terminal junction at the horn relay, and from the ammeter black wire terminal to the battery cable lug at the starter solenoid, or check either ammeter terminal to ground (battery connected) with a test light; if you find an open (continuity check) or no power (test light) on either circuit, you know which wire to start tracing - it's probably in the firewall connector. If both circuits check OK, either the voltage regulator has gone south or it's the ammeter.- Top
