During the month or two in 1967 when BB hoods were installed on SB cars, how were the hoods painted? Would a yellow car have had the black stinger or would the hood have been solid yellow?

Personally, I don't think that any of these 67 big block hoods originally used on small blocks had painted "stingers". Also, they did not have any "numerals" on the sides of the "scoop" as did 427 versions. However, when an original (or later) owner found themselves with a small block with a big block hood, the temptation to have it painted a la big block might have been too much to resist for some.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1967 BB Hood on SB
My opinion is that these hoods would have been simple substitutions with no additional cost invoking painting. But that is only an opinion.I have encounter two of these cars. One was a repaint in black with no stinger color. The other, which prompted this discussion, was a yellow coupe with a black painted stinger.
This owner won several awards at a meet in New Jersey while offering the NCRS as proof of originality of the hood. The question of the paint was allowed to ride the coat tails of the argument. I felt that the car was customized, not stock, due to the paint. I suppose what garnered my attention was the copy of a NCRS article which quoted Noland's book on the occurrance of the BB hood. I considered it less than honest to have not mentioned that the inclusion of the stripe and the "327" numerals on the hood took it past the intended point of Noland's article. But then the owner was a "Homer" at the show!- Top

One of my sources of information on this point was the late George Barlos who worked at the St. Louis Corvette plant for many years. In converstaions that I had with George on this subject, George mentioned that he remembered the situation in which these hoods were substituted. He also remembered that they were not painted with the "stinger". I believe that George was an inspector at the plant at the time so this would have been something that he would have had direct contact with.
George was an absolutely invaluable reference when he was alive. His passing left us with an irreplaceable loss not to mention the loss of one of the finest gentlemen that I ever knew.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
