8784887 "does not compute" as any casting number used on a Corvette transmission case or extension housing. Even if you are reading the first "8" incorrectly and it is actually a "3" (i.e. "3784887"), that still does not yield any valid number.
The "GM3" is a mold number and of no particular significance. The "E241" is a date code and represents May 24, 1961. So, on the basis of the date, this does not appear to be original for a 1958 year model Corvette.
You did not mention what kind of transmission this is. That MIGHT help in further ID of it.
Thanks for the response! The trans is a 2 speed automatic - the engine is a 307 from a '69 Chevelle. If none of this helps I'll see if I can find more codes on the trans.
