Had my '72 rally wheels blasted clean to the metal. I purchased the Eastwood rally wheel paint kit for GM "argent silver". Was told that it's probably the only "true" correct color for my '72. I primed the wheels first. This stuff seems to be an extremly high solids color, and goes on very shady and dry looking. I was thinking of clear satin coating them to get a smoother finish. If I spray closer to get a wetter/smoother coat it starts sagging. I've read that the original paint work had runs in it also. Any suggestions? Should I continue on? I've only done one wheel and I'm not very happy with the results. I wouldn't want to lose points over something like this. Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: 72 RALLY WHEEL COLOR

Although its been a few years since I refinished the wheels on my 72, I recall that the surface was definitely not flat -- somewhere between semi- flat and gloss actually. The tone was a subdued silver, very similar to pewter. I do recall a couple of runs, but those were on the inside of the wheels. If I was doing yours, I'd stop at this point and try some other "argents" as samples until you find a better match.
Good luck, Cal- Top
