    1965 corvette

What is the value of a 1965 vette that is in non-working order. The car has not been driven for at least 5-8 years, will need new tires, battery, probably an engine overhaul. the brakes were always a problem as well.

The short answer is that its not possible to tell you, because value depends so greatly on the originality, condition, and options of the car. The engine, tires, and brake problems will not be a serious detraction (perhaps about $4k or $5k) for a car that is otherwise very original and in excellent condition.. Most "safe driver" 65's with minimal desireable options (no A/C, FI, 396 ci engine, knock-off wheels, etc) go in the mid-twenties, but range from about $17k up to $40k plus (with desireable options and superb condition & originality).

If it is truly only a "project car" with minimal options and in need of a total restoration and lots of new parts to be roadworthy and presentable, then $10k to $15k might be a reasonable price. If the car is an untouched example that looks quite presentable when cleaned up and has nearly all its original factory parts, never wrecked or repainted, frame in decent condition, etc, it could be a "Bow Tie" or "survivor" that could be worth quite a lot more than a project car because it then is in a separate category in the Corvette world.

You need to find someone knowledgeable about Corvettes to assess the car first-hand.

I would have a knowledgeable guy check the frame out. This vintage is notorious for rust on the bottom of the frame at a point just in front of the rear wheel, called the "kickup". The repair is expensive, even if you do much of the work yourself. If the frame must be removed, then figure about $1500 - $2500 minimum if you remove the frame, and $5000 + if you have someone else do the complete job. If the frame must come off, you'll likely find yourself doing a bunch of other stuff as well, which pushes the investment even higher!

Good luck! I hope the car is right for you!

        Monica,

While my expertise in in C3's, I thought I'd respond for two reasons.

First, be prepared for a lot more than what you listed, especially on a car that's been idle for a while. I'd say x2 or more. And of course, as the other folks indicate, it depends on a LOT of factors, including the originality, options, etc. I think Wayne's estimates were probably accurate, unless there are unusual circumstances, such as rare engine combinations, a very original car, etc. I'm worried about possibly needing an engine overhaul. Do you say that just because it's been sitting (shouldn't need overhaul if it is prepped properly for re-starting), or has someone told you there's a problem? As you may know, an overhauled engine that loses it's engine stamp due to a block decking loses significant value to many people.

Second, your last name, at lease in the Southeast, is quite unusual, although it wouldn't seem like it should be (it's not Hecklinsteinbergerson or anything). Anyway, Hello from a fellow Hampson!

        Michael
