    62 electrical problem.

I just purchased this 62 a nice clean driver. It appears that when any power is required i.e, brake lights, running lights etc. the gas gauge moves to the full side. The gauge reads fine when no power is drawn. Any suggestion as to wher to begin to look as I am a novice.

    Tony -

VERY common C1 problem - the gas gauge sending unit in the fuel tank shares a common ground with the tail/stop/turn signal bulbs, and if any of the ground connections are corroded, the fuel gauge "jumps" when any of those lights are activated. Clean the ground connection at each lamp housing, and clean the rear lamp harness ground connection to the frame at the left rear corner of the trunk. This should help - if not, the tank cover (behind the seats) needs to come off and you should run a dedicated ground wire from the sending unit to the frame - that will definitely cure it.

Common C1 problem with an easy solution. Remove the gas tank cover in the top well. Attach a # 12-14 wire (black wiould be nice) to one of the screws on the sending unit. Then drop the wire down thru the hole on the rt side of the tank where the fuel line goes. Underneath the car, drill a hole in the frame for a small sheet metal screw in an inconspicious place and attach the other end of the wire. This will properly ground the rear circuit and should solve your problem. Your rear lights may burn brighter as well.
