Joe, thanks for the piston info. Most of the stuff you've posted I was well aware of except for the piston differences. I may've posted it above, but I've got 2 original engined 70 LS6 cars, an original engined 70 LS5 Corvette and an original engined 71 LS5 Corvette. I've been in the engines on all the 70's, but never this particular 71.

One reason for my confusion on some of this is probably (in addition to a real poor memory) a 71 LS5 that I bought over 10 years ago. The previous owner said he'd changed the pistons and camshaft and seems like we determined that it had 70 LS6 TRW pistons with the car's original 71 open chamber heads and I think it had some kind of Crane hotrod camshaft. Anyway, I stuck a set of open chamber, rectangular port heads on it and it really woke it up. I can't for the life of me remember what we ended up with for an intake, but I do remember sticking a GM dual plane similar to a 375HP/425HP intake on it and having to take it back off because of the hood. I had that car less than 90 days and sold it because of my interest in originality, but it was fun while it lasted.

Lyndon, that 4 bolt LS5 statement intrigues me. I've never seen a documented example of a 4 bolt LS5. If you know for a fact that they were factory produced, I'd be very interested in a casting # and date code. Is it your belief that these were factory machined with all the other 4 bolt details like the large plugs over the oil filter and the intake valve relief in the top of the cyl walls? I guess the question is, if these engines were in fact built this way, was it intentional, or just filling a temporary parts shortage with blocks that would've otherwise been used in SHP engines?

The TRW piston may well be exactly the same as the GM OE piston. I just don't know that for sure.
