    body dollie

I,am in the stage of painting my 1963 z06, I have the body off strip down to the bare shell, I don,t want to put my clean restore chassie on the body and sent it down the paint shop, to get my chassie full of over spray & dust from the paint shop, is it safe to make a wooden dollie to tranport the body around to paint shop, without cracking a new paint job & flexing on a flat bed truck, I,am don.t know what the best thing to do, without damging a new paint job any answer to what should do. thanks danny

    Re: body dollie

Danny, I drew out the plans and built a movable dolly from 2x4. I configured the dolly to cover the inside of the body tub, and held it down with long J bolts that were threaded and washered at the top at 4 corner points in the body tub. The wheels were 200lb each capacity and screwed into the four down posts which were made of 3ft high 4x4. Two of the wheels swiveled and two were stationary, I built wood braces to hold the inside front, and rear end. I transported the whole unit, dolly and body together on a low flatbed trailer. When it came time to mate the body and chassie, I transported the chassie on the same trailer to the paint shop and we had a mating party. Now you have a rolling chassie. Worked fine, and it was so well received I sold it to a gentelman building a 57 like mine. Kept it in the corvette family.

      Danny,

I built a body dollie from an old hospital bed that all 4 wheels swiveled for my 1963 roadster and it worked fine. I cut off all the vertical appartaus and put 4 X 4's as crossmembers at the appropriate locations and ran long bolts through the mounting holes but in back of and in fron of the doors and it worked fine.

Clik on the NCRS Store button at the top of this website. Then clik "Search Store" then clik "Restoration Resource Guide". There is a booklet called The Body Lift Workbook that has a dolly plan drawn out in it.

          Danny,

I did the exact same thing as Ed except I left the radiator frame in. I thought that it would help minimize flex in the front end when I was transporting the body around.

One thing to be carefull of is not to have the two back 4x4 vertical posts too far 'forward'. I did that and it caused the inside top section of the two posts to hit the back outside area of the seat depressions of the body. (I may be naming the 'seat depressions' incorrectly.)

I built it with 1/4" lag screws and I think that it was pretty stable. As a matter of fact, I 'flatbed' it about six times (that's another story!). What was nice was that in my 2-car garage, I can turn it around 360 degrees. Made it easy to work on.

Personally, I wouldn't spend the money on the plans that are available. It is just a retangular box with wheels on it. Just don't skimp on the wheels and make sure that the side 2x4 boards line up closely under the body next to the door line.

          Hope this helps.

          Gary

I made my 68 coupe dolly from four 10" hospital gurney casters and two cut down scaffolding sections and X braces.

Nice part is that it can be busted apart and basically stored flat.
