    Rear Susp. Parts Questions - '65SB

    I am currently taking apart my rear suspension. The Trailing Arms are going to be sent to Bairs. I plan to refinish my 9 Leaf Spring and install new liners and center bolt. I have a couple questions about some of the different parts.

    1.) I plan to replace all the U-joints, driveshaft and half-shafts. Which U-joints should I look to purchase? I believe there have been some positive posts regarding the spicer u-joints. Any specific part numbers? approx. cost? When replacing the U-joints, should I replace the u-bolts, or can they be reused?

    2.) Regarding the leaf spring and mounting, should I reuse the anchor plate and bolts, or spring for new?

    3.) Same goes for strut arms, at very least I need bushings. Is it worth it to buy the Vette Brakes adjustable strut arms, or just buy stock replacement?

    I ask these questions because I need to save money where possible, but I don't want to sacrifice safety or ride quality. Originality is not a concern either.

    Thanks
    Ryan

    Re: Rear Susp. Parts Questions - '65SB

    Ryan----

    Considering the parameters which you mention in your last paragraph, here's what I recommend:

    1) Use Spicer u-joints purchased directly from a Spicer dealer. I don't have the current Spicer part numbers, but a Spicer dealer will be able to determine the correct ones for your application. Go with the type with grease fittings. These are less expensive than the "Lubed for Life" type and will perform just fine in your application. I recommend that you purchase and have these installed by a driveline shop which is also a Spicer dealer. Installing the half-shaft u-joints can be difficult for the inexperienced and the outer flanges can be ruined. Driveline shops usually charge only a nominal amount for installation service if you purchase the u-joints from them. You can re-use the u-bolts if they are undamaged;

    2) Reuse the spring mounting bolts and the mounting plate if it is undamaged and not significantly distorted. I do not recommend reuse of the spring END bolts (the 2 long ones) unless they are absolutely perfect;

    3) You can rebuild your existing strut RODS if they are undamaged. Simply clean them up, remove the old bushings, and press-in new ones. The rods will be as good as new. No adjustable replacements are advised or necessary.
