I recently had an old freind tell me about an expereience where they were selling their 67 corvette that they has owned for 20 years .. 2 gentlemen showed up and began to look over the car .. one flipped up the gas tank door .. removed the gas cap .. looked at it and inside the gas tank and with a loud voice stated very clearly that the tank was not the orginal tank for the car .. well I was very surprised to hear that since I was one of the people who helped remove and reinstall the same tank some 15 years ago (by the way we did take pictures of the tank sticker)... what the heck was he talking about
how can you tell .. from a gas tank cap

Who knows? He sounds like some bellicose jerk masquerading as a Corvette "expert". There are only two ways that someone could tell if a Corvette fuel tank was non-original by looking inside the tank. First, they could look for the "O. L. Anderson" logo which is embossed on the bottom surface of the tank and visible from inside the tank if one can see it through whatever gasoline is in the tank. However, if the tank was original to the car it should have had this embossment. In fact, even GM SERVICE fuel tanks sold until about 1991 had this embossment.
Second, some of the later GM SERVICE fuel tanks have "squarish" indentions in the upper and lower ends whereas the originals had "roundish" indentions. However, I know that the upper indentions cannot be seen by looking through the filler opening and I'm virtually certain that even the lower indentions cannot be seen thusly. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
