    FI syphon breaker solenoid

I plan to install an electric solenoid below the plenum on a 1960 7320 unit as a positive fuel shut-off. It will prevent gas from flowing out of the fuel meter while the ignition switch is off. The solenoid and wiring will not be obvious. However, with some effort I'm sure others will be able to see this modification.

Has anyone had experience showing a '57 -'63 FI unit with such a solenoid at an NCRS event? How was it handled on the scoring sheet during flight judging? I consider it a prudent feature, but it was not a stock item on any FI unit before 1964.

As I recall the key words are "tasteful" and "inconspicuous". If effected, there should be no judging penalty.

      Jerry,

I can't answer your question yet, however I plan to do exactly what you are.

My FI unit is being refurbished at the moment, I'm not sure if the individual would like their name broadcast on the Internet. Suffice to say it is one of our own members recognized as one of a few "pros". He strongly recommends this extra step.

IMO the installation of the solenoid as a safety device should be as important as the fire extinguisher in the eyes of the NCRS.

Only time will tell. I hope to have the car judged in the spring at our Northeast chapter meet. I'll keep you posted.

      Best Regards from Connecticut...................Mark

Jerry, does it really matter? At worst, IF THEY NOTICE, could it be more than a one or two point deduction by any knowledgable judge? There's one on my '60 racer, if only because the thought of removing all that "stuff" because of hydrauliced motor is senseless.
